OUT OF SIGHT - GRAPHIC TRIAL グラフィックトライアル 2020 “Baton”

Exhibition, Graphic Experiment, Poster

N/A; Exhibition featuring works

2020

Every classic was once the off-beat.

Graphic Trial is an annual invitation exhibition by TOPPAN PRINTING CO., LTD. in Tokyo, designed to challenge and expand the frontiers of graphic design and printing. It invites eminent creators to craft original posters, exploring new expressions in offset printing and beyond. The exhibit not only showcases these posters but also delves into the creative journey ── highlighting the experimentation, materials, and notes that narrate the production narrative.

The 2020 edition of Graphic Trial adopted “Baton” as its theme ── a metaphor rich with implication. It represents the passage of a creator’s vision through the stages of printing: from design to prepress, press, and finally, processing. In a year when Tokyo was to host the Olympics (later postponed to 2021), the baton also resonates with the spirit of sportsmanship and the legacy passed to future generations.

In his participation in this venture, Aaron Nieh presents his poster series titled OUT OF SIGHT, aiming to exemplify the unique flair and dedication inherent in individual creativity. The series, ranging from poster 1 (left) to poster 5 (right), captures a progression of divergent phases, styles, and the rich diversity that signifies the evolution of graphic design.

Much like the innate talent an athlete possesses, graphic artists infuse their work with their unique essence, capturing the spirit of the times, distinct philosophies, and colour palettes. They introduce fresh aesthetic visions and perspectives to their audiences. In doing so, they carry the baton forward, merging and sometimes breaking through established boundaries to create what will become the classics of tomorrow.
